Due to X-mas delays, we only ended up getting to Punta Arenas the morning of our flight out to Puerto Montt, and it is on a Sunday unfortunately.
Unfortunately because even though Punta Arenas is a fairly developed largish town, the largest in Southern Chile, is somewhat a "cosmopolitan" port town, it does have some interesting aspects.
One of which is the close proximity to the largest penguin colony down under South America, but it requires a day to visit, which we don't have, so automatically had to pass this one.
For breakfast we end up at Lomit's, the closest thing to a diner you'll find anywhere on this continent, serving up Chilean diner food though, not Americana!
There is a Croatian 'hood. with a Croat consulate, coffee shops and everything, proudly displaying Croat flags on their doors.
A small store here has got some very interesting human characters printed on t-shirts and we go in to find out who they are. They are the local indigenous Selknam people of the past apparently, who used to paint their bodies for rituals, to reveal the mysteries of life to the young ones. As suspected, Selknam are all extinct now, thanks to man, in the name of colonization, wiped them out.
Walked the pretty promenade by the Magallanes Channel, dotted by numerous monuments to the mighty men who crossed the channel back in the days. Old and dilapidated piers from the turn of the century are occupied by flocks of cormorants now.
Seagulls are busy picking thru the crazy amounts of trash that washed up to the beach. It seems like trash from all parts of the world somehow end up here, that almost looks like an art installation to remind human race of their wrong doings to the nature.
Some of the shops open in the afternoon only, so the town gets busier later in the day. But the rugby store is closed, because Sunday is the lord's day.
Central plaza is also busy with folk who just came off the cruise ship docked in the harbor. Small artisan booths in the plaza offer a wide variety of handicraft, some cheesy, some well made and original.
Late afternoon, it is the end of our stay in Punta Arenas, we have to head out to the airport for our Puerto Montt flight, where we will be for the New Year's.
